The dahlia is a magnificent flowering plant to have in the garden, giving us endless flowers from later summer to the first frosts of autumn.
I enjoy growing them and tending to them throughout the hot months.
I put each dahlia tuber in its own pot of peat-free compost and place them in a warm place. This triggers them into life and starts the growing season.
They will start to grow bud eyes and be ready for transplanting in a few months’ time.
The aim is to be ahead by ensuring the dahlia tubers go in the ground ready to shoot up and flower.
Once you have potted your dahlia tubers in a nice, moist, peat-free compost, you can let them establish themselves. Look out for tiny green eyes in the coming months.
These will become shoots, and once the risk of frost passes, we can transplant each dahlia tuber in their summer home in the beds and borders.
Dahlia tubers will want a well-drained spot with plenty of sunshine.
So, let’s get back to the potting bench and let the work begin.
